Mark didn't want his first salute to be someone he didn't know so he was able to save it until he returned home. He called up a buddy from the NCO Academy where he used to work, here at Knox & asked him to come over to give him his first salute as a 2nd Lt.

for being the first one to salute him, Mark gave Joe an Ike centennial silver dollar which is the tradition for a first salute.
Mark also gave a silver dollar to Noah.
